Please log in for more thread options What do you do at this time of the year when actioning water changes ?
My tap water is at 4 degrees C, and I need to do a 20% change to my Juwel
Vision 180, which I guess is 3 x 2 gallon buckets syphoned out and replaced
with tapwater treated with Aquasafe.
Suggestions please on how to bring the water to a safe temperature, or if I
need to.....

Try boiling a kettle to use with 2 gallons at a time, mix with cold, add
aquasafe and leave it to work while 2nd kettle boils. After hoovering
gravel, add the first one ready and then a second. It's enough to get
powerhead back on whilst 3rd kettle boils. I replace the same amount in my
Juwel 180 twice a week as I have spawning angels in there who need more
water changes. Even with my minnows who live in water about 74 degrees, I
still take the chill of the water at this time of year. Mary

Perhaps controversially, I used to use water from the hot tap to bring mine
up to a acceptable temperature. I used to keep (and breed reasonably
successfully) Discus in tap water and always took warm water with me.
Boiling a kettle is another way of doing it as is placing a heater in the
bucket a few hours before you need to use the water.

Why "controversially"? I've been doing 25% changes by mixing water
from hot & cold taps for over 30 years and the fish have never had a
problem with it. I don't use any additives either.

Just that over the years I have kept fish, a lot of magazines have been
against using the domestic hot water system and you normally get "jumped on"
if you admit to it. It used to be because of lead pipes, then copper pipes,
etc.The general theory at the moment I think is that if you have a new house
with new copper pipes, don't use the domestic hot water. After about 6
months when a film has had a chance to coat and maybe some scale it should
be okay to use.
