Weed on my plants? !Speedy Gonzales! 05-18-2006

I have noticed recently that a dark, stringy, weed has started growing from
my amazon swords leaves and other plants. My water is very clear and all
values/readings are good. All my fish are healthy enough and I have what I
think is an average amount of algae/green stuff on my ornaments.
So, should I have any concerns over this stringy weed that is growing on my
plants leaves or do I just leave it get on. At the moment it is about 2 cm's
long but hope it doesn't get that long and unruly that it causes my filter
problems. I tried pulling it off but the leaves of my plants get damaged.
Any advice?

Hair algae. Cause by Nitrates and Phosphates in the water. Not a lot you
can do about that except regular water changes, and chances are your tap
water contains them anyway from agricultural run off. Chemical filters
will remove them.

The best alternative is to invest in some Yamato Shrimps or Siamese Algae
Eaters. They will eat it.

Make sure they are real SAE though, the false SAE will eat the algae but
it isn't as good.
