any idea how I can get rid of black algae that is clinging to ornaments and
plants? I know a Siamese Algae eater would eat it but they seem few and far
between here in Manchester!

Remove the algea nutrients from the water and the algae will go.
You need to lower Phosphates and Nitrates.

When doing water changes either:
-Use a resin based remover on your tap water.
-Use RO kit
-Use clean collected rain water

If you can remove the items then soak them in a diluted solution of thin
bleach. Rinse very well before returning to the aquarium.
