I purchased a colony of furry mushrooms about a year ago and they done
fantastic but then one lost its way and slowly crept its way into a crevice
in the rocks. it had been the largest with a diameter of 6 - 8 inches but
now all I have is a furry stripe of about 3 inches by 1/2 an inch.
should I try to transplant it or leave it to sort itself out. the whole
colony seems to have dropped off since this one went walkabout.

Robin

P.S. which foods do your corals prefer. had some green stuff from STM but I
stopped getting it and now seem to be paying the price.

Leave it. It will eventually get bigger and grow out I'm sure.

I feed the corals when I can be bothered - I use STMs phyto culture, the
Kent phyto stuff, occasional live phyto from the local shop or nothing at
all - I'm not sure it makes very much difference in the short term - so one
month they get nothing the next it's a feast. The main thing is getting the
light, flow and water right (I think maintaining Magnesium, Iodine and
Strontium makes the difference to coral colour).

how much do you feed them and at which part of the day or night. magnesium
is one I haven't added before. Strontium, calcium and iodine I have used but
this is new to me.

I feed the corals about the time the lights go off, sometimes a little
later, say an hour after lights out - there seem to be more polyps extending
at that time.

Magnesium is very important, if you have low magnesium is affects the
ability of hard corals to take up calcium and as the normal level is about
1350 ppm there's a lot of it in sea water. When I first tested for Magnesium
my level was about 300 ppm (the Salifert kit is easy). A lot of water
changes and additive later it runs 1200 to 1400 ppm and everything looks a
lot better.

I have just checked the large mushroom and it seems to have split into three
parts but only one has a mouth. I'll just keep an eye on this to see if
it'll settle down.
