Apologies if this question has been asked previously, I am new to this
group! I have two tanks with mollies, platy's and swordtails. The fish have
produced several young, mostly the mollies but recently the platy's too. I
would like to know if you can tell when the female is ready to have the
young so that I can isolate her and prevent having to catch the young after.

Hi Dave,
Welcome to the headache zone lol .
The usual gestation period for most live-bearers is 4-6 weeks and the
average brood can vary from 20 - 100 sometimes more,
Mollies take about 8 weeks to produce a brood average number 20-80.
As for the telling when lol its guess work unless you have specifically
bred a pair in a brood tank, but the easiest way is if you have a large
enough tank , when you think the fish is ready place in a breeding trap
with a through flow of water in the tank because you can almost bet on
the female spawning at nigh in the dark .
Hope this helps good luck with the fish
Andy
